Nothing could be nicer for Valentine's Day than chocolates in a lacy red heart with a big bow--except for this luscious, sweet wine.
Sokol Blosser's 2006 White Riesling Dessert Wine shares some of the same elements as fine chocolates---nuances of honey, hazelnuts and vanilla, for example, rich sweetness (21% residual sugar) and hand-crafted care.
And it's organic, produced from grapes grown in Sokol Blosser's vineyards in the Dundee Hills in Oregon's Willamette Valley.
The grapes were frozen immediately after harvest, then crushed while still frozen. This allowed the sweet, pure grape nectar to be separated from the water in the grapes, which remained frozen. A "faux" ice wine, in other words.
Although it's called a dessert wine, this low-alcohol (10.5% ) Rielsing is more versatile than that. I tasted it with black cod in a sweet miso sauce at Ma'Kai Restaurant and Lounge in Santa Monica, and this was a very good match.
Only 150 cases were made. Such a rare wine is usually restricted to friends of the winery and wine club members. But in this case, anyone can order it, as long as the supply holds out.
Sokol Blosser's 2006 White Riesling Dessert Wine is $40 for a 375-milliliter bottle. To place an order, go to http://sokolblosser.com
