Kinotos—the word sounds so exotic, possibly Asian, perhaps Japanese. The only way to unmask their identity was to encounter kinotos first hand. And so I ordered kinotos al whisky at Via Maggiore, an artisanal ice cream parlor in Buenos Aires. What I got was a cone with a high-rising scoop of Scotch-flavored ice cream encasing orange globules, the mysterious kinotos.
One bite and that tart-sweet flavor was unmistakable. Kinotos are kumquats. Since then I have tried kinotos al whisky at some of the best ice cream shops in Buenos Aires, and Via Maggiore's version is always the winner. It's like the cocktail hour, with kumquats instead of olives.
