Traveler's Favorite: Casa Oaxaca

Casa_oaxaca

We were planning a trip to Oaxaca, and I promised I’d let you know about restaurants we especially liked.

The favorite was Casa Oaxaca. We ate there twice so I could re-experience camarones al guajillo con alcaparras, setas, flores de calabaza y ajo (prawns with guajillo chiles, capers, oyster mushrooms, zucchini flowers and garlic). The dish was served on a pureed plantain base—delicious.

Both the bar and restaurant are beautifully designed, with a gallery entrance that sets the mood.--K.W., Paso Robles

Casa Oaxaca is located at Garcia Vigil 407, Oaxaca, Oax., Mexico. Tel: 52 (01) 951-514-4173.

User Favorite: Mojitos and Ca Kho To in Maryland

One of our favorite restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area is Taste of Saigon in Rockville, Maryland. It’s an oasis from the drab dining one finds in most suburban areas.

Taste_of_saigon_1 Our favorite dishes are the black pepper soft shell crab, which is spectacular, and ca kho to, which is caramel fish in a clay pot. Thank goodness there are two of us, so we can always order both entrees.

Surprisingly, we have found that this wonderful Vietnamese restaurant also makes divine mojitos, which are a fantastic accompaniment to the delicious entrees.

Get there before 6 p.m. for a good table or make a reservation. In the summer, be sure to ask the servers to seat you in the patio, which is complete with a koi pond, flowering plants and live bamboo. –Teresa and Scott, New Market, Maryland.

User Favorite: Lechon Asado in Orlando

Oasis When I fly to Orlando to visit my brother and his family, I may be the only passenger on my American Airlines flight thinking about a pig and not a mouse.

We discovered Oasis Cuban Cafe about five years ago; it looked out of place on busy four-lane Ronald Reagan Blvd.  in Longwood. A plain Cuban country diner on a stretch of road that has become home to block upon block of chain restaurants and mini-malls and tire shops. Now, Oasis is my Stop No. 1 when I visit central Florida. The food is fresh, flavorful and simple.

At this point, we've pretty much eaten through the menu, which is universally  tasty and reasonably priced (my niece Ali likes the football-sized potato croquette appetizers). But most of the family keeps returning to the pork category, to our favorite dish, Lechon Asado--roast pork.

Oasismeal This is meat at its simplest: slow-roasted with garlic, onion and spice. For a while we were disappointed after Oasis upgraded to a better cut of pig--that "other white meat," which tends to be leaner but less flavorful. Fellow  customers must have had similar concerns, because the fattier, less perfect pork has returned.

I prefer  the long-cooked, nearly carmelized bits and pieces that come heaped with onion and garlic. Perfect on its  own, the meat is accompanied by white rice, good beans and meduros--savory fried plantains (another favorite).

In fact, Oasis, next time you can hold the rice and beans. Lechon y meduros are all I need. And a couple cold cervezas. --Greg from Chicago

User Favorite: Isaan Food in Hollywood

My wife and I go to Pailin almost every weekend. My favorite is the Isaan (northeastern Thai) dishes. They have the best somtam (green papaya salad), tod mun goong (shrimp cakes), northern sausage, and they make great sliced beef with spicy sauce, called sua long hai (crying tiger). They also serve frog in three different ways for the adventurous.

It’s very cozy too, newly decorated and adorned with Thai wall hangings that the owner brought back from his recent vacation. --–SG, Glendale

User Favorite: Super Schwarmas in Oregon

Schawarma Abu’s Oasis Deli makes great Lebanese food. We really enjoy their schwarmas, which consists of grilled steak or chicken, onions and a really wonderful sauce all wrapped in a pita. My wife always gets chicken, while I get either steak or chicken. They’re made with lamb too, and you can even get them without meat.  –Eric Ball, Grants Pass, Oregon.

User Favorite: Lemon Chicken in Illinois

Everything is wonderful at I Am Siam, but I especially like the lemon chicken.  It’s not on the menu, but Bonnie Nanakon, the host and owner, suggested it.  It is chicken breast, deep fried quickly, I think, very juicy and with a crust on the outside, served sliced on a platter.  The lemon sauce has pieces of chopped lemon in it. User Favorite: Not Chicken Salad

I thoroughly enjoy the special chicken salad at Leonor’s Mexican Vegetarian Restaurant in North Hollywood. I get it 90 % of the time I go there. The chicken is made of tofu, and it’s combined with cabbage, shredded carrots, red onion, olives and soy mayonanaise. They put avocado and carrot sticks on top and give you a homemade whole wheat roll on the side. It’s so good, you can’t stop eating it. --C.J., Valley Village

User Favorite: Pho in Florida

Pho_hoa_1_2 There is very little English spoken at Pho Hoa in Tamarac, Florida. We usually order the more exotic dishes, such as pho chin, nam, gau, gan, ve don, which is noodle soup with brisket, flank, tendon, fatty and crunchy flank steak. But every one is a winner. We've tried almost all of them. --ELMO, Columbia County, New York.

User Favorite: The Lowdown on Laja

Laja_restaurant For fine dining in Southern California, there isn't a restaurant I've been to in LA--Sona, Lucques, AOC, Campanile, etc--that thrills me as much as Laja on Highway 3 between Tecate and Ensenada. Best yellowtail of my life there….carpaccio with avocado, preserved lemon and fennel. And a grapefruit and yerba santa granita.

Manzanilla in Ensenada comes a close second. Both use true Southern California produce, meat, fish and WINE, and the experience is like eating Tuscan cuisine in Tuscany.

Laja is the Chez Panisse of the late 80s that LA deserves...except it's in Mexico. ---Rae, Los Angeles

User Favorite: Bosnian Pizza in Chicago

Art_pizza_cafe I've read with interest your reviews of Argentine pizza, so I thought I'd let you know about my favorite pie. It's found in Chicago, and, no, it is not the city's famed deep-dish variety. Instead, it's very thin-crust pizza, made by Jasmin Bekto, a Bosnian native, who learned pizza-making in Milan. (That's him in a TimeOut photo at r.)

At his Pizza Art Cafe (folks often mistakenly call him Art), two handcrafted wood-burning ovens turn out individual-sized pies made with a wide variety of toppings, including intensely-smoked house-made sausage. A favorite is the super-thin Napolitana, made with anchovies, oregano, olive oil and tomatoes; the artichoke pie is another star. Like many Chicago ethnic restaurants, Art's is BYOB, meaning patrons can bring along a bottle or two of nice wine to accompany their meals. --Greg, Chicago
